Holiday shoppers plan to rely on BOPIS

Posted on 27th November 2019

A huge majority of shoppers plan to use buy online, pickup in store (BOPIS) services this holiday season, with 93% reporting that they will pick up ecommerce purchases in stores, motivated by a desire to save time and money, per Retail Dive.

Breaking those out further, the research indicates that nearly half were choosing BOPIS as it meant getting their purchases faster, while 44% said they could save on shipping costs. Another hugely significant factor is that for 83% of respondents, retailers should be offering environmentally sensitive delivery options. BOPIS is a more efficient way for retailers to fulfil orders as they can be delivered in bulk to stores rather than in ones and twos to consumers home addresses.

This reduces greenhouse emissions and limits traffic congestion. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Gen Z respondents were the most invested in the environmental factors of delivery, with 60% saying that it was ‘very important’ to them.

For retailers, this should be welcome news, as shoppers who collect their orders from store reduce their last-mile fulfilment bill and often purchase additional items once in store, improving profitability.
